Recently, more and more wood speakers manufacture both in China and all over the world, chose polyurea coatings for decoration, instead of traditional coatings.

What traditional coatings does speaker box use before?

We all know that wood is not waterproofing, and it’s easy to be damaged and corrosion, so that we often paint coatings on the surface.

Most traditional coatings are solvent based, or water based, solvent based coatings is not environment friendly, and both solvent based coatings and water-based coatings, need longer time to waiting for the coatings dry.

Sometimes in the cold winter, the factory needs to put the coated speakers into an oven, to make it quickly dry, which will cost a lot of money and waste of time.

And the traditional coatings are thin and brittle, especially for the outdoor speakers, they need to be moving and assembled often, the traditional coatings are easy to be damaged, or peeling off or chalking.

If the coatings are damaged, then it will not protective the speakers, it will reduce the durability of wood speakers.

Why use polyurea for wood speakers?

Polyurea technology used for speakers, has been more and more popular now, because it has many advantages compare to the traditional coatings.

First, it’s no solvent system, friendly to the environment, nontoxic, less heathy influence to the workers.

And spray polyurea cure very fast, significantly improve the production efficiency, save labors and time for process.

Besides, polyurea is waterproofing, good abrasion and scratches resistance, and provides different and uniform textures, which has good decorative properties.

Polyurea is the most durable coatings, it makes the speakers more durable after exposure to the UV for a longtime.

What is the process to spray polyurea on speakers?

In order to get a smooth surface, first we use some putty to fill the defects or pinholes on the wood surface, then grind the putty with fine sandpaper.

Sometimes we use primer and sometimes we don’t, it depends on different needs from the customers.

Then we spray speakers polyurea with high pressure and high temperature machine, this formulation is different from waterproofing polyurea, it’s more rigid, in order to get better texture and better scratch resistance.

First, we spray a smooth surface, and start from the corner then flat surface, then overspray in a longer distance to get a sandpaper texture.

The gel time of polyurea coatings used for speakers is about 3~5 seconds, and you can move the speakers gently with in several minutes, don’t need to heat or wait for a long time, save the time and space.

Which formulation of polyurea should I choose for speakers?

In order to meet different needs of our customers, we developed different formulations.
For hot spray polyurea, which is high efficiency, the most popular one is JHSW8605 Loudspeaker Box Decorative Protection Polyurea Material, and there is also JHSW8605S and JHSW8605C, they have a little different from the appearance.

For white speakers, which is also exposure to the UV, we have developed aliphatic polyurea, which is color stable for long time use outdoors.

For some small speakers in small quantity, we also developed cold applied low pressure polyurea, which can be sprayed by cartridge, it cannot only spray with the cartridge fluently without plug, but also get a good texture just similar as sprayed with high pressure polyurea machine.

How many kgs of polyurea would I use for each square meter?

Usually, considering about the protection property and cost, we suggest spray about 0.5~1mm polyurea for speaker.

The consumption of polyurea for each square meter is depends on the size of the speakers, if small speakers, the loss is more, and the loss is less for big wood boxes.

In order to control the loss, we can use small tips and chambers of the gun, and spray smooth surface before over spray.

How about the adhesion of polyurea and wood?

In fact, different customer use different wood, there is plywood, composite wood, birch wood..etc, and even birch wood, the different place of production is different properties.

Sometimes we directly spray polyurea without primer, and our polyurea has better adhesion on birch wood from Russia, if you need better adhesion, you can also apply primer.

But considering that polyurea sprayed all over the wood box, the adhesion is not that important than spray polyurea than on a layer of the substrate, such as the roof or floor.

Most of the customer directly spray without using primer, and the peeling off never happened.

Can I choose different color?

Yes, the most polyurea we produced for speakers is black, some customers use dark grey black, and there is also brown or white speakers.

Polyurea has the feature of coatings, which can be tintable, we can provide different colors by add pigment in the B side, you can choose from RAL or Pantone color card, and just tell us the numbers you like.

But consider that aromatic polyurea will turn yellow after exposure to the UV, if you choose light color, aliphatic polyurea is recommended.
